Painting the Landscape  Old San Juan

Jan D’Esopo is a talented artist who is also a wonderful teacher, with a multitude of tips and suggestions to share. Everything is covered from the materials to subject matter to the final highlights and special effects that give the painting panache. In this film, Jan gives three separate demonstrations, all with wonderful lessons on how to capture the right elements in a landscape painting. In the beginning Jan takes you on a tour, evaluating several different settings for their suitability as a painting, complete with the “whys and why nots,” using sketches to illustrate her explanations.

At Ponce de Leon’s famous home, Jan does a complete sketch of a scene she has chosen, and then a small acrylic watercolor rendition. In her garden studio, Jan uses the small sketch to start the finished painting which is a very colorful enlargement of this same study.
